Custer students participate in band and choir festival

Nicholas Castro, honor band, alto saxophone; Ariel Cisneros, festival band, clarinet; Michelle Dehaven, festival band, flute; and Sean Dehaven, festival band, alto saxophone; were among the 270 high school students hosted by Chadron State College for the 38th annual High Plains Band and Choir Music Festival Feb. 1-2.

Elders' Wisdom, Children's Song 'insightful'?

Four Custer County elders were honored last Tuesday evening, Feb. 2, during the 2010 Eldersâ?? Wisdom, Childrenâ??s Songâ?¢. It was an evening, unlike many others, for the honorees. And, quite eye opening for one.

Martinez attends 4-H Congress

Nina Martinez of Custer attended the National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, Ga., last November. She was one of four who represented South Dakota.

Custer Elementary among the healthiest schools

Custer Elementary School has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Agriculture with a Silver Award for its commitment to its student s health through physical activity and nutritional excellence in the lunch and breakfast programs. The official presentation of the award will be in March of 2010 by the USDA and the South Dakota Child and Adult Nutritional Services.

Glazier takes second in PPK

Not only did the Minnesota Vikings host the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, Nov. 22, but the team in purple also hosted Custer eighth grade student Chase Glazier, who competed in the Team Championships round of the NFL Punt, Pass and Kick contest in Mall of America Field. Despite no punting, kicking and throwing a total distance he wanted to, Glazier walked away from the dome in second place. Still, though, the trip was well worth it he said.

Above and beyond for senior projects

A senior project is described as a high school capstone experience that requires students to demonstrate not only what they know, but what they can do. From the looks of it a crop from this year s senior class shows they are capable of quite a bit.

Rhiannon s Walk set for Nov. 7

Wanting to make her senior project one for the memory books, Custer High School senior Ellie Parsons decided to put forth a little bit more effort than usual, so she developed Rhiannon s Walk. Rhiannon s Walk is a walk to help the American Cancer Society find a cure for leukemia, which is the most common childhood cancer, affecting more than 3,500 children in the U.S. every year.
