Custer wrestlers region bound

All except two Custer wrestlers will head to Stanley County this weekend to compete in the Region 4B Tournament. That number could’ve been great if Custer wasn’t able to right its wrongs after a rough start at the District 7B Tournament in Philip this past Saturday, Feb. 13.

Boys give More a scare, defeat Dogies

If anyone needed proof the Custer High School boys basketball team is playing some of its best ball of the year, they got it Saturday night. The Wildcats went into St. Thomas More’s gym prohibitive underdogs, and although they didn’t win, they looked every part of a team to reckon with in a 53-44 loss that saw the ’Cats actually lead 14-13 after the first period.

Slow start dooms girls against Cavs

Someone needs to take the snooze button off the Custer High School girls basketball team’s alarm clock.

In what has been an all-too-familiar theme for the ’Cats this season, they had a less-than-stellar first half of their game in Rapid City last Friday night, scoring only eight first half points in a 38-25 loss to the St. Thomas More Cavaliers.

Girls win a pair, lose one during three-game swing

Although it was a win, Custer High School girls basketball coach Stephanie Ornelas felt it was more of a struggle than necessary. The Wildcat girls basketball team headed north to Lead-Deadwood Feb. 8, and came from behind to pull out a 40-33 win over the Golddiggers after trailing the majority of the game.

Boys play 'best game of the year' against 'Diggers

Chad Bryant scored 22 points and Brandon Smith and Luke Roddy both added 12 as the Custer Wildcats completed a season sweep of the Lead-Deadwood Golddiggers with a 69-55 win Feb. 8 in Lead. Custer head coach Larry Luitjens called it the best game the â??Cats have played all year

'Cat wrestlers strong before Districts

Despite most of the team being either battered or sickly, a slew of Custer Wildcat wrestlers placed in the Hill City Invitational Tourney this past weekend in Hillâ??City. Cody Herman (103) set the pace for Custer as he took first place, while Clayton Wahlstrom (125) finished in third place, Soren Wahlstrom (130) finished in fourth despite not finishing due to a sickness. Max Wilson (135) finished in sixth place, Dylan Severyn (140) took second place, Zach Wager (160) took third and Ty Cooper (215) took fifth.

'Cats dominate Newell

TJ Stover scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Chad Bryant and Jordan Konkol both added 12 points as the Custer Wildcats cruised to a 78-26 win over the Newell Irrigators last Thursday night in Newell.

Wrestlers show split personalities

After learning an unwanted lesson in a dual against Douglas last Thursday, the Custer Wildcat wrestling team looked nothing like the team that lost to the Patriots when they competed in the Belle Fourche Invitational Tournament this past weekend. Instead of being passive, the Wildcats proved they can be both tough mentally and physically when they put their minds to it.

Girls fall to 'Gators, hold off Patriots

The Custer High School girls basketball team used an 11-0 fourth quarter run last Friday night in the armory to outlast the winless Douglas Patriots 52-38 in a game that was much closer for longer than most people probably thought it would be for much longer than those same people thought it should have been.

Wrestling squad closing gap on other teams

Instead of heading east toward Winner, the Custer Wildcat wrestling squad drove south to Chadron, Neb., to compete in the Chadron Invitational Tournament this past weekend. While no one from Custer placed, coach Jared Webster said it was nice to see Custer show signs of improvement.
