County 4-H members fare well at Western show

The Western 4-H Family and Consumer Science Show was recently held in Rapid City. The show celebrated the 50th anniversary of the show which is a two day event with many contests. The youth, both 4-H and other youth including Cloverbuds, who are youth younger than 9 years old, may participate alongside adults. Attendees were from South Dakota, Montana, Nebraska and Wyoming and represented 26 counties.
Special programs were held this year, including the Golden Diamond Anniversary Gala Friday evening, which also celebrated the 75th year of the Western Junior Livestock Show held on the same weekend each year.
Attendees at the Gala shared many memories from the past shows. The program was emceed by Lyndell Peterson, who has been connected with the shows for many years. The Western 4-H FCS Show honored the original directors of the event. Of the directors, four are still living.
LaDonna McKnight serves as president of the Western 4-H Family and Consumer Science Show. The show dates for 2013 are Oct. 11-12.
Among the Custer County 4-H members to place was Jessica Woodward, who was the third high individual in the Beginner division of the meat ID contest. Other placewinners were:
• Jayden Carrier, Cloverbud: measuring, meat ID, place setting, vegetable ID
• Weston Woodward, Cloverbud: vegetable ID
• Jessica Woodward: measuring, purple; meat ID, purple; place setting, purple; vegetable ID, purple; fashion revue, purple; home living, purple; photo, purple
• Raina Perli: photo, blue; meat ID, purple; vegetable ID, purple; skill-a-thon, blue.
