Destination ImagiNation teams visit with the world

Published: Thursday, May 31st, 2012

Two Custer Elementary teams participated in the Destination ImagiNation 2012 Global Finals on the University of Tennessee Campus in Knoxville May 21-26. The Time Travelers did their Challenge B: The Solar Stage main challenge Thursday at 8:18 a.m. and their Instant Challenge Saturday at noon. Their challenge required using solar energy in a new and innovative way which they solved  by using donuts to create a solar cell from a solar oven. Duck Tape Productions did their Challenge C: Coming Attractions Thursday at 12:30 p.m. and their Instant Challenge Saturday at 9 a.m. Their challenge required them to create a movie trailer for a movie they imagined and they did—competing against over 100 teams in their age group

Every remaining second that they were not eating or sleeping was spent meeting other DIers from around the globe, including kids from Ecuador, China, Singapore, Poland, Turkey, England, Columbia and most of the other states. They traded pins, swam, rolled in giant hamster balls, watched other teams perform, danced, saw amazing duct tape costumes, went up the Sunsphere, manned an instant challenge practice booth, stepped in cornstarch and water, ate nitrogen frozen graham crackers, talked with representatives from NASA, got gifts for their families and were enthralled by the opening and closing ceremonies.
The event coordinator said at opening ceremonies that they try to make Global Finals as fun as possible for the kids who attend and the chaperones agreed that the entire experience was as close to kid heaven as you can get while still including adult chaperones.
