Custer girl donates birthday money to Humane Society

In honor of her 12th birthday, Kassidy Adam asked her friends for special gifts, like any girl would. Only Adam didn’t ask for the newest video games or movies; she asked for donations toward the Humane Society.

“I’ve always loved animals,” Adam said. “I felt like I didn’t really need a lot of gifts because I already have a lot. I decided I should give to something else.”

Adam has two dogs, Patriot and Nala, and has always had animals around since she was 2.

“They are just like us,” Adam said. “They have feelings and needs just like us. We need to help them.”

So when Adam’s birthday finally came on April 17, her friends gave their contributions. In addition to dog food and supplies, Adam donated $150 cash, all from birthday donations.

“My friends really surprised me by how much they donated,” Adam said. “I didn’t think I would have much, but some friends brought $20 and others brought food. It was really suprising.”

Two weeks ago, Adam and a couple friends took their donations to the shelter, surprising animal control officer Geney Ziolkowski.

“I was so surprised that a young girl would ask for presents for the animals, it’s truly amazing,” she said. “This proves that there is hope for our children. To give to others is great. I was in complete shock.”

The shelter currently spends $500 a month on the animals, which includes food, medical expenses and shelter cleaning.

“It’s clear to see Kassidy took away a message from her experience and it was meaningful,” Ziolkowski said.

“I really liked helping the shelter and I would do it again,” Adam said. “Geney gave my friends and me a tour and even invited us over anytime to see the animals. It was a lot of fun!”
