Students have character-filled week
Published: Thursday, October 31st, 2013
Last week Custer Elementary had its “Character Counts” week in conjunction with the ever popular Red Ribbon Week coordinated by elementary physical education teacher Joey Kortemeyer.
Students started every morning of school with a positive morning message and story about something inspiring. At the end of each story, elementary principal Heather Hiltunen encouraged all students to “Make it a good day or not. The decision is yours.” This week, guest readers from grades three through six read the stories and encourage everyone, as well as challenge all to make positive choices.
The first ever performance of the Custer Elementary drum and band line, under the direction of Mary Weidenbach, was very popular and got the events off to a positive and exciting beat. These students look up to our high school drum line and elementary officials want them to know they are role models to the students.
With the help of student leaders called the “Fabulous Party Planners,” a number of fun activities were planned. The highlight of their contributions included 36 additional students that produced a video for all to enjoy at a school assembly.
Each of the pillars of trust, The Golden Rule, responsibility and caring, as well as Red Ribbon Day themes were acted out in the video. Music was also incorporated, and some of the Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) also helped Kortemeyer with the technology end of the project.
The entire elementary choir led by Jody Tennyson performed the song, “The Golden Rule.” The group then celebrated with a guest appearance of “Captain Character” (Brad Kaiser). Party leaders were recognized by Captain Character for their contributions to all the weeks’ activities.
The celebration ended with the Fabulous Party Planners leading the entire school in “The Wave.”
Stay tuned for more information about Red Ribbon Week activities that junior/senior high SADD students will report on in coming editions of the Custer County Chronicle.
