The Custer High School soccer team got its season started off with a bang last weekend, traveling to East River and routing Chamberlain 10-0 last Friday before rallying late to pull out a 2-2 tie with Huron last Saturday.
The Wildcats scored early and often against the Cubs in Chamberlain, scoring six first half goals, beginning with a Chasen Cole goal in the fourth minute off a ball assisted by his sister, Destinee Cole. David Hernandez put the ball in the net four minutes later and then scored again in the 10th minute to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead. Chasen Cole scored another goal in the 24th minute and two minutes later Hernandez completed a first half hat trick with his third goal.
Custer finished with 24 total shots, also getting goals from Sloan Shorb, Graysen Trandem, Rowdy LeFebvre, Rocky Hayford and Alex Kortemeyer. The Wildcat defense held Chamberlain to only two shots on goal the entire game.
In Huron the Wildcats fell behind early on a direct kick, but Hernandez answered with a header to tie the score 1-1 on a throw in by Trandem.
The teams went into the half tied, but Huron again claimed the lead in the 62nd minute with a goal. The Wildcats pulled out the tie, however, when Trandem scored late in the game to make the score 2-2.
Tomorrow the team is back in action with a match in Sturgis, scheduled for 6 p.m. The team makes its home debut Saturday with a 1 p.m. match against Vermilllion.
