Rally mishaps pile up
Published: Thursday, August 8th, 2013
The annual Custer Cruisin’ and Sturgis Motorcycle Rally has begun, and with that come rally accidents. There have been several accidents within Custer County.
During the week, a 2010 Harley Davidson, driven by David Whiteside, 63, from Marengo, Ill., was traveling westbound on Wildlife Loop Road in Custer State Park. According to Whiteside, he was negotiating a left hand curve up a steep grade when an unidentified unit was traveling eastbound in the curve on the wrong side of the roadway. Whiteside took evasive action, swerved to the right, ran off the road and overturned onto its side.
The Harley’s passenger received minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to Custer Regional Hospital. Speed and alcohol were not factors. No helmets were worn.
On Aug. 4, A 2003 Harley Davidson FSI motorcycle driven by Dino Losole, 41, from Omaha, Neb., was traveling north on S.D. Highway 87 mile marker 62 on the Needles Highway. Losole was traveling around a tight curve in the road and locked up his front brakes. As a result, he became separated from his motorcycle.
