This week marks the 90th anniversary of the beginning of Custer City’s annual celebration, Gold Discovery Days! Three days of fun-packed events will include a number of Custer High School class reunions. We welcome returning alumni to their respective reunions. We’ll see you in the Saturday morning parade.
Friday kicks off with the Custer Piecemakers Quilt Show at the Custer Armory from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The three-day Arts and Crafts Festival begins at 10 a.m. and runs until 7 p.m. A Stockade Lake Trail Hike starts at 1 p.m.with participants meeting at Stockade Beach. From 2-4 p.m. the Fourth Annual Caroline Hatton Judged Flower Show will be held at the Custer Senior Center.
The Kids Gold Nugget Hunt will be held at Harbach Park at 5:30 p.m. followed by the fun Kids Stick Rodeo just east of the Chamber of Commerce building on Washington Street. In the evening theater patrons can enjoy “Children of Eden” at the Black Hills Playhouse starting at 7:30 p.m., or attend the nightly 7:30 p.m. performances of the Grand Magic Show at the Show Barn adjacent to Flintstones. At 8 p.m. a family night Fireman’s Ball Street Dance will start at 6th and Crook streets. At dark, the Legends in Light Laser Show begins at Crazy Horse Memorial just north of Custer.
Saturday’s events start bright and early with a hot Air Balloon Rally at Pageant Hill at 5:30 a.m. The annual Lions Club Pancake Breakfast will be held in Way Park downtown from 6-9 a.m. The annual GDD Car Show runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at South 6th and Mt. Rushmore Road. Also, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. the Shoot For Gold archery shoot will be held on America Center Road three miles east and five miles northeast of Custer. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. the Judged Flower Show will again be open at the Custer Senior Center.
The Quilt Show will continue from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. as will the Arts and Crafts Festival from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Way Park. The big Gold Discovery Days parade starts at 10 a.m. through downtown Custer from east to west. A sloppy joe lunch is served at the Senior Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. From noon to 6 p.m. a Jump-n-Fun Fair with inflatables for all ages will be held at Harbach Park and Washington Street by the Chamber of Commerce.
Registration for the 1 p.m. GGD Volleyball Tourney will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at 7th and Washington streets. Also starting at 1 p.m. is the Wildcat Golf Fundraiser 4-Man Scramble Golf Tourney at Rocky Knolls Golf Course. The Playhouse will have a 2 p.m. matinee and a 7:30 performance of “Children of Eden.” Team registration for the 7:30 p.m. Gold Nugget Teen Quadrathon will be at 7 p.m. next to the volleyball courts. The Grand Magic Show performs at 7:30 p.m. in the Show Barn. A second Fireman’s Ball Street Dance will be held at 8 p.m. at 6th and Crook streets. At 9 p.m. there will be a Teen Movie Night at the Custer tennis courts and at dark the Legends in Light Laser Show starts at Crazy Horse.
Sunday kicks off bright and early again with the 5:30 a.m. Hot Air Balloon Rally at Pageant Hill. The Gold Rush Fun Run starts at 8 a.m. on the Mickelson Trail by the Chamber of Commerce building, with registration at 7:30 a.m. The archery shoot is scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon on America Center Road. The quilt show continues at the Custer Armory from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A Vineyard of the Black Hills church service will be held at 9 a.m. in Way Park in downtown Custer. A Playhouse matinee is at 2 p.m. featuring “Children of Eden.” An Old Timers baseball game is set for 2 p.m. on the new ball field east of Custer. The The 7:30 p.m. Magic Show and laser show at Crazy Horse at dark concludes the wide array of GDD weekend activities.
