From left, Mercedes Elliott, Kaytlyn Bergeron and Kendall Ashmore will represent Custer on the London Varsity Tour. The three were selected for the team while attending a UCA camp in Custer. They are the first cheerleaders from Custer to be a part of the team.

Three Custer High School cheerleaders will be living a dream next year.
Juniors Kaytlyn Bergeron and Kendall Ashmore and senior Mercedes Elliott will represent Custer across the pond in London for the annual New Years Day parade, similar to the annual Macy’s parade in New York City. The three were chosen to participate in the festival after trying out for the team at a Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) camp, hosted in Custer. Only sophomore, junior and senior cheerleaders can make the trip.
“This was the first ever camp hosted in Custer,” said Mechelle Powers, co-cheerleading coach. “All of our girls were able to participate it in as well as cheerleaders from Hill City.”
The camp taught the girls various dances and cheers, but also helped them clean up their stunts and finishes.
“They did simple stunts with a technique and they did it really sharp. It looked really amazing,” Ashmore said. “It was more college-type things.”
In addition to being named All-American Cheerleaders for the 2013-14 year, Bergeron, Ashmore and Elliott were the only girls from all the attending schools to make the team going to London. In order to make the team, the girls tried out in front of judges with material they learned during the camp.
