The youngest of 12 children, William “Bill” Roy Wells was born Dec. 6, 1939, in LaPeer, Mich., to Harry and Jean (Peck) Wells. He attended school in Metamora, Mich., and Fairhope, Ala.
After his military service with the USAF (1959-1969), he moved to Sioux Falls, S.D., and then Lennox, S.D. While working 30 years at the John Morrell meatpacking plant in Sioux Falls, he was also a union steward for UFCW-Local 304A.
Upon retirement, he moved to Custer, S.D., in 1999.
Bill died Friday, June 21, 2013, at his home in Custer. He was 73.
He was preceded in death by his siblings Lincoln, Grant, Lee, Arnold, Helen, Clara, Mildred, and Dorothy; and his grandson Kendall Cressman.
Bill is survived by his wife, Lois Wells of Custer; his children, Brian (Emily) Wells of Elkpoint, S.D. and Camille Wells Cressman of Brandon, S.D.; two children from a prior marriage, Valorie Wells and Regina Wells of Fairhope.; grandchildren, Calvin Cressman, Nicole Wells and Natalie Wells; siblings, Betty Chapple of Saginaw, Mich., Carolyn (LaVern) Haver of Fairhope and Bob Wells of Jasper, Ala.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 29, at Custer Community Church with Pastor Bill Comfort officiating. Burial will be at a later date at the National Veterans Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with the Custer Humane Society and the Custer Community Church Allen Organ repair project.
