Brennan Witt has his summer off to a blazing start.
Witt, a senior-to-be at Custer High School and the three-time defending state champion in Class A in the 800, posted a new personal record in his best event when he competed at the Midwest Distance Festival in Illinois last weekend. Witt ran the race in a time of 1:53.36, shattering his previous personal best by three seconds. His time was also the third fastest 800 run in the history of South Dakota high school athletes.
“This meet is all about getting kids personal records,” Witt said. “I was really excited. It’s a totally different level of competition.”
The meet was made up of the fastest high school runners from around the region, and could be attended by invitational only. Witt’s time placed him second in his heat and seventh overall out of the 18 runners who competed in the 800, which was held in two heats.
“I was excited when I saw the official time. I watched the scoreboard as I went across. I knew it was in the top 10 for all-time fastest time,” Witt said.
Witt said the level of competition helped propel him to the record time, and admits to being “really nervous” to run against such great competition.
“I’m usually nervous right up to when the gun goes off,” he said. “Once the gun goes off the race has started and I’m focused on what I have to do in the race.”
Witt will go right back into competition when he runs in the New Balance Outdoor National Meet in Greensboro, N.C. By virtue of times he has posted in the 800, he has been invited to this weekend’s meet.
