Thanks to you, we’re Number One — again!

It’s almost becoming a habit, but we don’t want to take it for granted. For the sixth year in a row, your Custer Country Chronicle has won the prestigious Sweepstakes Award for the best all-around newspaper in its circulation class (1,151-2,000) in South Dakota! And, your newspaper has won the Sweepstakes Award seven times since 2004.
The Chronicle also won the General Excellence Award in its circulation class and earned a record 13 first places in various advertising and news/editorial categories at the annual South Dakota Newspaper Association convention held jointly with the North Dakota Press Association this past week at Rapid City. This was an historic convention in that it was the first time the two Dakota states had held a joint annual convention of their press associations.
Awards and accolades from your peers are great to receive, but they don’t pay the bills. We never forget that our readers and advertisers are the ones who make it all possible for us to succeed. Without your wonderful support in our weekly newspapers and special publications and magazines, we could not possibly do what we do. Your support makes it possible for us to retain a veteran, professional staff to carry out the mission of producing only the best in print publications in the Southern Black Hills of South Dakota.
It takes a team effort at any level to succeed at any task, whether it be producing a weekly newspaper and other print publications, or winning a track or golf meet. We have a great team at the Chronicle that works well together like a well-oiled machine. Every week we face deadlines that must be met if we are to publish our newspapers in a timely manner, and we meet those deadlines like clockwork.
Congratulations, also, to our neighbor to the north, the Rapid City Journal, which won the Sweepstakes Award in its daily circulation class of newspapers over 9,000. The Journal staff outdid its competition in this class, the Aberdeen American News with less circulation, and the Sioux Falls Argus Leader, with more circulation. We may not have the best sports teams in Western South Dakota, but we have two of the best newspapers in the state here.
There are 11 daily newspapers in South Dakota and 119 weekly newspapers for a total of 130. All of them are represented by the S.D. Newspaper Association which has its headquarters in Brookings.
