Boys squad hoping for state championship

The Custer High School track season is under way, and with 70 athletes out for the team, both the boys and girls squad figure to have formidable teams this spring.
All eyes will be on the boys team this spring, as a number of athletes return from a team that won both the region and conference championships last year and is looking for a third straight conference crown. The boys finished as runners-up at the Class A state meet a year ago as well.
“I think we have a fair shot of it on the boys’ side,” Black said. “Spearfish, Douglas and St. Thomas More are all going to try and be deep to challenge us.”
The boys team returns two state champions, including junior Brennan Witt, who won the 800 as both a freshman and a junior and seeks a three-peat this spring. Junior Clayton Wahlstrom won the pole vault last year, as well.
Also back is Jared Thomsen, who placed second in both the 110 and 300 hurdles, and Cody Herman and Logan Burns, who figure to anchor the distance races for the boys. Everyone returns from the team’s 4x800 relay that placed fifth at state, and three of the four runners from the fourth place finishing 4x400 team.
