Wahlstrom to represent Custer at dual

While the wrestling season may have ended for high school wrestlers, Clayton Wahlstrom will keep going. The Custer High School junior will represent South Dakota at the Disney Duals in Orlando, Fla., this summer.
“I was really excited to be asked,” Wahlstrom said. “I’m excited to go to Florida. It will be hot down there, but it will be fun.”
Wahlstrom earned his spot on the team after placing third in the 170-weight class at the State ‘B’ wrestling tournament in February. The competition, open only to junior wrestlers, will begin June 27 and finish July 2.
“I usually do post-season tournaments and summer matches, but nothing this big,” Wahlstrom said. “It’s good to get offseason work. It keeps me focused.”
After the wrestling season wrapped up, Custer wrestling coach Jared Webster told Wahlstrom about the invitation and pushed for him to go.
“He said it was a fun and good experience,” Wahlstrom said. “It would help get my name on the map for college recruiters.”
“I got to do it my junior year and I thought it was neat and exciting,” Webster said. “He will get to see quite a bit. Plus it’s nice to see someone from Custer represent South Dakota.”
There will be 14 weight classes represented at the dual, with two wrestlers filling each spot. Wahlstrom will wrestle at 182 pounds.
“I’m still growing and by then I will be bigger,” he said.
In his training, Wahlstrom will focus on getting out from the bottom and take downs. He’ll also be participating in the track season this spring.
“I’m looking forward to the experience and getting better,” he said.
“I hope he takes away a lot of skills for next year,” Webster said. “It’s nice to see the reward from all the hard work he put in throughout the year — and he gets a little vacation out of it!”
