It’s been a fixture in the community and a source of employment for many Custer residents, but come March 15, Heartland America will close its doors.
Nearly three weeks ago, employees at the Custer and Rapid City branches received word that the two branches would be closing due to “current economic conditions.”
“It is one of Custer’s biggest employers and it’s going to put a lot of people out,” said an employee from the Custer branch, who had been with the company for nearly 10 years and asked to be anonymous. “I’ve got my resume out there, but I’m not from here, so to be out there is scary.”
“A bunch of us heard from other coworkers that it was closing and then we got our letters shortly afterwards,” said an employee from the Rapid City branch. “Management didn’t tell us anything until we received our letters.”
The Custer branch will close March 15 and the Rapid City branch will close April 15. Representatives for Heartland America declined to comment.
While the Custer and Rapid City call centers will close, the main center in Chaska, Minn., as far as some employees know, will stay open and expand.
