Second amendment not about hunting

Since the tragic Newtown, Conn., school shooting last Dec. 14, there has been a series of knee-jerk reactions, all seemed to be aimed at AR-15 “assault” style weapons. For some reason, anti-gun zealots believe if only these guns and their high-capacity magazines were banned, all of our mass shooting crimes would go away.
Any talk of seriously addressing the treatment of mentally ill people in this country seems to have taken a back seat to gun control issue talk. Prior to the 1960s, we institutionalized mentally ill people. Now we try to treat them with anti-depressants and other mind altering drugs. They are all around us in society today.
We see numerous “talking heads” on television telling us no one needs an AR semi-automatic rifle with 30-round magazines to hunt deer. Well, they are right. We don’t need an AR with 30 shots to take down a deer. Chances are, if you miss a deer on the first shot, you are lucky to get a second at a running critter.
So, if we don’t need semi-auto ARs for hunting, they say no one needs to own them at all. Really? Why shouldn’t law abiding citizens be able to own a semi-auto AR if they so choose? Responsible, legal gun owners should be able to have any legal firearm, regardless of its semi-auto capability or magazine capacity.
All the public mass shootings we have had lately in this country have been carried out by perpetrators with some serious mental problems. They somehow got ahold of these weapons and used then to carry out their evil deeds.

Not everyone jumps on the bandwagon about anything in this country. Everything is pretty much split down the middle. Realistically, the gun thing is about money. The NRA is a lobby for the gun industry... it is NOT about "rights" and there is no indication the government is going to take away your guns. Both the left and the right get hysterical every time there is any kind of a shooting, and nothing ever changes. The only absolute: The violence tends to gravitate to where there are guns.
