Ellen Winter

Published: Thursday, January 10th, 2013

Ellen LaVonne (Ellingson) Winter was born along with her twin brother, Arnold LaVern Ellingson, June 10, 1940, at their family farm near Forestburg, S.D., to Alfred Oscar Ellingson and Foresta Minerva Ellingson (Jopp). Ellen graduated from Forestburg High School and attended college at General Beadle Teachers College in Madison, S.D. She met James Russell Winter, who literally swept her off her feet with an airplane ride. They were married in Forestburg Aug. 24, 1959.
They settled southwest of Huron, S.D., where they farmed with Jim’s family for many years. Ellen kept house, gardened and raised many types of poultry as well as enjoyed oil painting, volunteering with their church and traveling when possible. In 1970 they purchased their dream acreage outside of Custer, S.D., where they built over the next 10 years, their “retirement” home.
In 1980 they relocated to Custer where they owned and operated Winter Radio – radio sales and service. Ellen loved the Black Hills and enjoyed sharing many happy times with friends and family here.
Ellen died Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at Custer Regional Senior Care. She was 72.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and several nieces and nephews.
Ellen is survived by her brothers, Gene (Mae) Ellingson of Forestburg, Wayne (Marie) Ellingson of Federal Way, Wash.; and Arnold (Cheri) Ellingson of India, Calif.; her husband, Jim of Custer; one son, Jack Winter of Huron; two daughters, JoAnn (Dan) Stearns of Elk Mountain, S.D., and Jenny (Tim) Behlings of Custer; granddaughter, Anna Winter of White River Junction, Vt.; and grandsons Jay Winter, of Huron, Dalton (Dani) Stearns of Haiti, Morgan Stearns of Torrington, Wyo., Russell Behlings and Joshua Behlings, both of Custer.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 10, at Custer Lutheran Fellowship with Pastors Tom Opoien and Kent Narum officiating.
