Girls close out year with loss to Douglas

The Custer High School girls basketball team traveled to Box Elder last Friday night, losing its final game of 2012 by a score of 63-19.
Douglas jumped on the Wildcats early, using sharp cuts to get past the trailing Wildcat defense. The cutting led to easy baskets and a 41-11 halftime lead. The Wildcats never threatened in the game, and will take a 1-6 record into the new year.
“I don’t think we regressed, but our weak side defense and transition defense weren’t organized a lot of the time,” Custer head coach Stephanie Ornelas said. “We didn’t talk on defense. Man-to-man defense takes a lot of focus and talking so you know who has who. We weren’t organized in that aspect.”
The Wildcats spread their scoring out amongst several players, as their leading scorers, Darian Turner and Nykyla Malinosky had only four points. Sam McNeel, who has done the bulk of the scoring for the Wildcats this season, was held to only two points.
