Another shooting brings more questions
Published: Thursday, December 20th, 2012
The nation reeled in the aftermath of another senseless school shooting this past week that ended up taking the lives of 20 6 and 7-year-old students and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., last Friday. The apparent lone 20-year-old shooter also killed his mother and himself.
Such acts of evil defy logic and leave us all asking why these acts of violence keep happening in this country of ours. Many point to the violence we see in the form of Hollywood movies, television shows and video games.
Most of us remember a time when there were no school shootings, or any kind of shootings at public malls and theaters. Now it seems these terrible events are becoming more commonplace, which leaves us all asking why?
It is unbelievable for any of us to even contemplate how any human being could break into an elementary school and shoot 20 innocent youngsters in their classrooms and another six defenseless adults trying to protect them. How could anyone carry out such a despicable act?
One answer may be that there are many more people today suffering with some kind of mental illness that suddenly manifests itself in unbelievable acts of violence, such as this most recent school shooting. Obviously, we need to do a better job of identifying these people before they go off the deep end and harm other people.
There will be much discussion in the weeks ahead about gun bans in particular, but these terrible events will not be eliminated by banning any kind of guns. Mentally disturbed people will find other ways of harming others. We have to identify the causes that set off these people and do everything we can to eliminate them.
Taking a hard look at our culture of violence in this country would be a good first step.
