Boys win season opener in Newcastle

The Custer High School boys basketball team got its season started with a 48-34 win last Friday night in Newcastle, Wyo., in a game that Custer head coach Larry Luitjens said “looked like the first game of the year.”
“There are a lot of things we’re not ready to do correctly yet,” he said. “We have guys who don’t have a lot of experience, and it looked that way.”
One player who does have experience is junior Chase Glazier, who had 24 points and six rebounds, making him the high scorer for the game. Cody Martinz added 11 points and Kenneth Myers had nine.
Ironically, the team shot better from the three-point line (50 percent) than it did from inside the arc (39 percent).
“We missed some good shots, but we’re going to make those,” Luitjens said. “We played solid. I think Newcastle is better than they were last year.”
Luitjens was pleased with the team’s half-court defense, singling out Myers, Erik Hiltunen and Jared Thomsen as players who led the charge on defense.
