It’s not often a gadget play works in high school football. It’s even more rare when that gadget play was just put into the playbook the week before the game.
The gadget play gods were smiling on the Custer High School football team last night during the Wildcats’ first round playoff game against Bennett County, however.
Up 22-13 with 3:36 left in the first half, JaredThomsen intercepted a Bennett County pass on the Wildcat five-yard line, snuffing out a potential Warrior touchdown drive to close the half.
Custer appeared content to just run out the half, handing the ball off on five consecutive plays, each time to sophomore running back David Gaston. However, almost every time Gaston carried the ball on the drive he gained a sizeable chunk of yards and soon the Wildcats were on the Warrior 40 yard line with six seconds left in the half.
That’s when the trickery came out.
