Big plays cost football team against More

Breaking in a new quarterback and playing with a battered psyche, the St. Thomas More Cavaliers went deep into their bag of tricks last Friday night in Rapid City.

A last second Hail Mary and a two halfback touchdown passes were among the big plays the Cavaliers used to defeat the Custer High School football team 34-14.

Big plays cost the Wildcats the entire game, including at the outset of the game when quarterback Chase Glazier was intercepted by More’s Witt Dobesh, who returned the interception 57 yards for a touchdown.

Custer answered right back, however, as Glazier found Jared Thomsen for a 65-yard touchdown pass that made the score 7-6.

Custer was threatening to take the lead with 17 seconds left in the opening half, but Glazier was again intercepted and More returned the ball to the Custer 28 with one second left on the clock. The next play, More halfback Newt Johnson passed the ball to Jay Cooper for a touchdown, giving More a 14-6 lead going into the half.

“The last two games we have been giving up the big play,” Custer head coach Russ Bailey said. “(The halfback passes) we knew were happening, and we still had a wide receiver behind our defensive backs. We’re struggling with recognizing plays.”
