Cross country teams look ahead

While the Custer High School cross-country teams began the season with injuries, things are looking to improve for both teams.
“As with each week we had some athletes race very well and some struggled with injury or illness,” said coach Karen Karim said of last week’s meet in Sturgis. “Different kids step up each week, but I was overall happy with the progression of the team.”
Brennan Witt, who has been out most of the season, placed 12th with a time of 18:05. The other previously injured runner, Cody Herman, did not run this week but will continue to focus on training for the region and state races.
With the competition at the meet mostly made up of AA schools, the boys team took a strong second place spot to Rapid City Stevens, with three top 15 place finishes. Logan Burns placed second in the race with a time of 17:05 and Chris Pinkerton finished out the medal spots in 15th with 18:21. Witt was the third runner to earn a medal in his 12th place finish.
“Logan ran to his highest place and fastest time ever in a varsity race,” Karim said. “He is looking stronger and faster as the season progresses.”
Logan Huntington placed 19th at 18:31 and Matt Dvorak was close behind in 21st at 18:37. Also rounding out the competition was Shane Herman in 27th spot at 18:59, Tyler Jones at 19:49, earning 37th, and Gunner LeFebvre at 22:38 in 70th.
