Evelyn Patricia (Cuny) Swallow Price was born Aug. 5, 1926, at Manderson, S.D., to Lawrence and Sadi (Speck) Cuny. Her parents ranched on Cuny Table (S.D.) and she attended grade school in a one-room schoolhouse. Her teacher was Margie Twiss.
Evelyn’s parents were forced to move off their land on Cuny Table because the government took over the land and turned it into a bombing range. Her parents had to move to Hot Springs, S.D., where Evelyn continued her education.
On April 7, 1943, she married Carl Leslie Swallow in Manderson at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Carl enlisted in the Army and Evelyn moved with him where he was stationed at Ft. Leavenworth, Wash. After the war Evelyn and Carl moved back to Manderson, where they worked on Horse Head Ranch that belonged to the Pouriers, Carl’s grandparents. They had three sons, Melvin, Lawrence (Lonnie) and Lester Duane (deceased). They moved back to Cuny Table and helped at her parens’ ranch. Evelyn went to work at the school teaching part-time up until they had to move off the Badlands (S.D). They then moved to Buffalo Gap, S.D., where Carl worked on Angostura Dam as a cement finisher. After Carl’s untimely death at the age of 32, Evelyn moved back to Cuny Table to be with her parents.
Evelyn married Joseph Price July 2, 1955, at Holy Rosary Mission. They moved to Omaha, Neb., and had two sons, Leo Basil Price and Michael Anthony Price. They bought a ranch in Walgreen, Colo. Later they sold the ranch and moved to Custer, S.D. In 1977 they owned and operated Custer Floral and Gift Shop until 1992. Joe is living in a nursing home in Custer and Evelyn lived near Crazy Horse until 2012.
Evelyn died at her home just as the sun was setting Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012. She was 86.
