Myrtle Jane Olson

Published: Tuesday, July 3rd, 2012

Myrtle Jane Krogstad Olson (M. Jane Olson) was born Jan. 7, 1925, on the family farm near Rindal, Minn.. the eldest of seven siblings.
After high school, Jane graduated from St. Cloud (Minn.) Teacher's College in 1945. She began her teaching career in Verndale, Minn., then moved to Thompson Falls, Mont.
After teaching for several years, Jane wondered if there was something more to life than teaching.  She and a friend moved to Colorado Springs, Colo., where she worked for the local newspaper. She soon realized teaching was her passion.
After her father died, Jane moved back to the family farm in Minnesota to help raise her youger siblings. She taught in both Fertile and Fauston, Minn. Longing for mountains and pine trees, Jane wrote to the Custer (S.D.) school district inquiring about teaching opportunities. The Custer superintendent met her in Fargo, N.D., for an interview and she was hired on the spot. Jane moved to Custer in 1959, where she taught for 32 years, retiring in 1991.
After retirement Jane continued to teach at Outlaw Ranch for Lutheran's Outdoors. She also taught confirmation at Custer Lutheran Fellowship and volunteered at the food pantry. Jane was a founding member of Custer Lutheran Fellowship, where she served in many capacities.
Soon after arriving in Custer Jane met the love of her life, Douglas Olson.  They were married on Dec. 27, 1960.  Jane and Doug had four children. Doug died in 1969.
Jane died Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at Custer Regional Senior Care. She was 87.
