Lion killed in Custer

Published: Tuesday, July 3rd, 2012

A mountain lion that was suspected of coming into city limits recently and killing a house cat has been killed by South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks (GF&P) officers after it once again came into town, this time late in the evening on June 26. The lion was killed behind Leo’s Auto, near French Creek on the eastern side of town.
John Kanta, regional wildlife manager for GF&P in Rapid City, said the lion was a female, around six or seven months old, that was in poor health.
“She was definitely emaciated,” he said. “She had a ratty coat on her and was not doing well. To be quite honest, we did her a favor euthanizing her. She was in pretty poor shape.”
Kanta said the cat is more than likely the lion that killed a housecat near Custer True Value April 16. He said there is another female cat, around a year old and 60-70 pounds.
“We have our eye on her as another potential issue in Custer,” he said.
