Two school records fell and another state qualification was met when part of the Custer High School track team traveled to the Howard Wood Dakota Relays in Sioux Falls last weekend. The meet did have some rain and lightning delays, but was eventually completed.
Tyler Schultz improved his school record in the discus, with a throw of 184-10. In doing so, he bested Mobridge-Pollock’s Daniel Roberts, who had defeated Schultz in Sturgis earlier in the year by a foot. Schultz’s throw won the meet, and he once again won the shot put with a throw of 67-3.
Cody Herman was the other Wildcat to break a school record, running the 1600 in a time of 4:26.78, beating the old record of 4:31.4, set in 1973 by Mitch Paulsen. Herman also placed eighth in the 3200, with a time of 10:00.81.
Brennan Witt ran his way to a fifth place finish in in the 800 with a time of 2:01.17, while Greg Witt finished in fifth place in the shot put with a throw of 50-2. Witt also placed sixth in the discus with a toss of 155-1.
In the girls competition, Karley Konkol just missed breaking the school record in the 800, running a time of 2:19.47, which was good for third place. Konkol also improved her time in the 1600, with a time of 5:17.60, while also anchoring the 1600 team that was just short of qualifying for the state meet, finishing eighth in a time of 4:16.34. Other team members were Sam McNeel, Tori Dahlstrom and Monique Mack. Mack also placed eighth in the high jump, clearing 4-10.
One other relay team placed for the girls, as the medly relay team of Mack, Konkol, McNeel and Mattie Kelley posted a time of 4:27.91, good for eighth place.
Because the scheduled Mountain West Invitational in Lead was cancelled last Saturday because of rain, some team members did not compete last weekend. On May 1, some of the team members competed in the Sturgis JV meet.
On the boys side, Zach Hollick placed third in the 400 at a time of 1:01.3, while Sam Mertz was seventh in the 800 at 2:37.4. For the girls’ squad, Ashlee Eggers finished second in the 800 at a time of 2:41.5, while Catlynn Cordell was fifth in the 100 hurdles at a time of 20.15.
This weekend, the team will look to defend its Black Hills Conference championship from a year ago. This year’s conference meet will be in Spearfish this Friday at 10 a.m.
“We are hoping for good weather this week as we go to Spearfish for conference,” head coach Craig Black said. “The St. Thomas More girls and Spearfish girls will be hard to compete with, but we will give it our best shot as we have a lot of talented girls. I think our boys can be competitive.”
