In my lifetime, I have seen every generation of young men in my family go off to fight battles on foreign soil. First my father, then my husband, and finally my middle son. I know the men in my family were proud to have served their country in the military. My father fought in World War II before I was born. As a teenager, I asked him about his experiences there, but he would never talk about it. My mother later told me that he had been in the Army Air Corps and, along with one other young man, was parachuted behind enemy lines in Germany. He was one of the first to see the concentration camps. The other man with him was killed. My father was in Hitler’s bunker and brought home after the war one of Hitler’s drinking goblets, a tile from his bathroom and one of Hitler’s guns.
