Published: Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

Arbor Day traditionally falls on the last Friday in April, and was celebrated this year on April 24. The Custer Conservation District sponsored an Arbor Day essay contest for Custer County fifth and sixth grade students. This year’s winners were Siri Tucker, first place; Shane Herman, second place; and Marissa Knapp, third place. All of the winners are sixth grade students and Mrs. Fiala is their teacher. The students base their essays on the importance of Arbor Day and trees. The essays are judged by the Conservation District board and the first place essay is submitted to the state competition. Dave Thom, Conservation District supervisor, presented the awards to the students. The essays follow.
