Constance Heintz was born April 1, 1923, to Anna (Miller) and Paul Miller at the home place north of Harrold, S.D. She was the youngest of eight children. She attended and graduated from Harrold High School in 1941.
Connie was united in marriage to Kenneth Heintz in November 1942. They had two daughters. Carol was born in 1943 while Kenneth was serving in the Navy during World War II. Rosemary was born in 1945. When Rosemary started school Connie went to work for Jack Bohning at the local grocery store and continued working for Marty and Sharon Winckler after they purchased the store. She retired after working over 30 years at Bohnings.
After 64 years of living in Harrold, Connie and Kenneth moved to Custer, S.D., where once again she found employment in the tourist area. She reluctantly retired due to her health after 10 years of summer work at the Flintstones.
Kenneth died in 2004 and Connie moved back to Pierre, S.D., in 2005 along with her daughter Carol and husband Phil. She resided at Lincoln Apartments until going into Maryhouse in March 2009.
Connie enjoyed bowling, golfing with her many good friends at Custer, activities at Lincoln Apartments and attending the great-grandchildren’s events as long as her health allowed. Her family will have life long memories of her apple pie and roast beef gravy. She never missed a birthday or remembering her large group of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren at Christmas. Connie was a member of the Catholic Churches in Harrold, Custer and Pierre over the years. She also was a member of the Harrold VFW Auxiliary and had just recently joined the Pierre Senior Citizens Center.
Connie died Friday, May 29, 2009, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre. She was 86.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth; her parents; brothers, Joseph (age 4), Charles and Josh Miller; sisters, Mary Johnson and Hazel Miller; grandson, Jody Lehrkamp; one niece; five nephews; eight brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law; and Kenneth’s parents, Daniel and Ethel Heintz.
She is survived by her daughters: Carol (Philip) Zebroski of Pierre and Rosemary (Cecil) Currier of Onida, S.D.; her grandchildren, Kristy (Randy) Frihauf of Burlington, Colo., Lisa (Carlin) Nafziger of Longmont, Colo., Kamie (Wayne) Feller of Harrold, Scott (Brenda) Currier of Onida, Thad (Kim) Currier of West Des Moines, Iowa, Daniel (Candace) Currier of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Kyle Currier of Onida; great-grandchildren, Toneille (Kyle) Witzell, Joshua (Arlene) Frihauf, Tyson Frihauf, Alyssa Uhernik, Jarrett and Taylor Nafziger, Lane, Chancey and Blake Feller, Caleb and Cade Currier, Skylar, Brooke and Brandon Currier and Courtney and Ashley Currier; great-great-grandchildren, Kaitlenn, Luxie and Swae Witzel and Keygon Frihauf; sisters-in-law, Phyllis (Leroy) Schaefer, Beverly (Herm) Venekamp; her very special sister-in-law and friend that she shared a room with at Maryhouse, Ella Heintz; and also numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Services were June 3 at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Pierre. Burial followed at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, S.D.
