Curtis Schweitzer

Curtis Schweitzer was born Oct. 20, 1933, to Alice and Fred Schweitzer in Eldridge, N.D. He worked several different jobs after high school, including as an insurance agent and reserve cop. Curtis joined the Army in 1950, where he served his country for seven years and was active during the Korean War. In 1957, he married Beverly Harris and moved to the Lead-Deadwood (S.D.) area and began his family. He also began working at the Homestake Gold Mine in 1957, where he worked until retirement in 1992. Curtis and Paula (Engel) united in marriage and family in 1986. One event that kept him busy after retirement was being the biggest and loudest fan of the family wrestlers. Curtis was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Moose Lodge, Eagles Fraternity and a lifetime member of the VFW. He enjoyed a good conversation, watching his baseball team, the New York Yankees, and he always looked forward to the time he spent with his grandchildren. Curtis died Monday, May 4, 2009, at this home in Lead. He was 76. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings. Curtis is survived by his children, Debbie (Dale) Wendroth of Sioux Falls, S.D., Kay (Russ) Webster of Custer, S.D., Jim Schweitzer of Huron, S.D., Donnie (Annette) Schweitzer of Lead, Tammy (Rusty) Burton of Ark City, Kan., Ginger (Chris) Larsen of Glendive, Mont., Stephanie (Scott) Owens of Rapid City, S.D., Justin Engel of NSB, Fla., and Jason Schweitzer of Lead; two brothers, Howard (Eleanor) Schweitzer of St. Onge, S.D., and Leo (Faye) Schweitzer of Bismarck, N.D.; brother-in-law, Gene Pfarr of St. Onge; sister, Shirley Perrett of Marshall, Wis.; 19 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were May 8 at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Lead. Burial with military honors will be at Black Hills National Cemetery.
