Mildred J. Slaughter was born April 1, 1927, to Ole and Edna (Peterson) Johnson. Her father died when she was a young child, leaving her to grow up with her mother and three siblings during the Great Depression. She graduated from Washington High School in Sioux Falls, S.D., in 1945.
Mildred married Albert W. Slaughter on Feb. 4, 1945, in Sioux Falls. They lived most of their lives in the Sioux Falls area and Black Hills area, retiring in Belle Fourche, S.D.
Her main focus in life was sharing her deep faith in God with those she came in contact with. She had a sharp business mind and enjoyed marketing her treasures.
She loved her children and was a devoted mother and wife. She had compassion for animals, was an avid reader and enjoyed music and movies.
Mildred died Sunday, May 17, 2009, at her home in Belle Fourche following a brief struggle with cancer. She was 82.
She is survived by her daughter, Connie (Ray) Auer of Spearfish, S.D.; two sons, Albert Jr. (Janice) Slaughter of East Peoria, Ill., and David (Ruth) Slaughter of Belle Fourche,; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Norma Wehling and Hazel Scoular, both of Sioux Falls; and a brother, Orlen Johnson of Lincoln, Neb.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Brian; and her husband, Albert.
Funeral services were May 23 at First Baptist Church in Belle Fourche with pastors Anthony Bradseth and Roscoe Schultz officiating. Burial followed at Custer Cemetery in Custer, S.D.
A memorial has been established for the National Child Evangelism Fellowship, 601 Fruitdale Street, Spearfish, S.D. 57783.
