Dr. Theodore Charles ‘Ted’ Moos was born June 2, 1922, in Fargo, N.D., to Dr. Leo and Rose Moos. He graduated from the University of Minnesota as a doctor of dental surgery in 1945.
Following dental school he was commissioned in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps and was attached to the U.S. Naval Air Station, Alameda, Calif. At this time, he married Marcia Saunders. From there, he was attached to the U.S. Naval submarine base, Subic Bay in the Phillipines.
He returned home to resume his father’s dental practice in Moorhead, Minn. He retired in 1995 after practicing dentistry for 50 years, and Ted and Marcia moved to Custer, S.D.
One of the highlights of Ted’s career was being instrumental in fluoridation of the water supply in Minnesota. He was a pioneer in the dental treatment of mentally and physically disabled patients within a hospital environment.
Ted always maintained a keen interest in small firearms, hunting, fishing and archery. He was president of Lake Agassiz Bowman, Minnesota Bow Hunters Inc. and the Clear View Rifle Club for many years. He was a member of the Military Order of the Caraboa, the VFW, American Legion and a life member of the American Dental Association.
An avid naturalist, Ted enjoyed hunting and fly fishing in northern Minnesota, Montana, Wyoming and Alaska. He also loved exploring the Black Hills and enjoying its diverse wildlife. He had a profound respect for the earth and all of its creatures. He had a great love of family and had many fine friendships.
Ted died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, at Custer Senior Care in Custer. He was 86.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Dr. Daniel J. Moos.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marcia Saunders Moos; daughter, Pamela (Charles) Cochran of Custer; son, Michael (Nancy Sparrow) Moos of St. Paul, Minn.; grandson, Christoper (Kari) Shotley of St. Francis, Minn.; and two great-grandchildren, Cole and Reese Shotley.
