Trevor Schryvers looks for a teammate to pass the ball to after tearing down a rebound during last Friday night’s home game against Belle Fourche. Schryvers is one of the team’s freshman who has seen significant playing time this season.

Basketball can be a heartbreaking sport.
No matter how well you play defense, no matter how much you hustle, and no matter how great you rebound, if you can’t make any shots, you’re going to lose. Monday night in Pine Ridge, the Custer High School boys basketball team couldn’t make any shots. Predictably, that led to a loss.
The Wildcats managed to shoot only 27 percent from the field in the opening round of District 15A play against the Thorpes, and the end result was a 56-47 overtime loss.
“We missed some really good shots,” head coach Larry Luitjens said.â“When you shoot 27 percent, you’re not going to win.”
Custer had a chance to win at the end of regulation, and got itself a wide open layup off a new sideline play with three seconds to go. The shot was missed, however, and the game went to overtime.
In overtime, Custer missed a layup and then the front end of a one-and-one free throw. The Thorpes scored, Custer turned it over, and the Thorpes scored again. From there, Custer had to foul, and Pine Ridge continued to make its free throws.
The team started the game well, taking an early lead by controlling tempo and playing solid defense. However, Luitjens said even when the team was winning it was missing shots it should have been making.
“Had we been making those shots we would have been up 15,” he said.â“It comes down to bad shooting. Not poor shot selection, but just missing the shots.”
One Wildcat who did make his shots was TJStover, who scored 13 points in the loss. Brandon Miller also had 13 points and eight rebounds, while Luitjens said senior Jordan Konkol did a fine defensive job on Thorpe sharpshooter Orrie Brown.
“Jordan finished out the year with another solid defensive performance,” Luitjens said.
Last Friday night the team wrapped up its regular season with a loss to visiting Belle Fourche, 56-51.
Custer started the game strong, taking an early lead, but Belle Fourche came back to tie the score at 15 at the end of the first period.
The Broncs hit back-to-back three-pointers to take a six-point lead at the outset of the second period, and Custer turnovers led to a another Belle Fourche basket. By the time TJStover stopped the bleeding with a layup, Custer was down 25-17.
Eventually the Broncs built up an eight point lead, as Custer would seemingly either score a basket or turn the ball over.
Custer continued to play behind in the third period, with Belle Fourche maintaining leads ranging from five to nine points.
It was the fourth period where the Wildcats made their charge, starting with a Luke Roddy three-pointer that cut the lead to three. The Wildcats continued to hang around, and eventually cut the lead to two with around two minutes left when Chad Bryant buried a three-pointer, making the score 51-49.
The Broncs put the nail in the coffin shortly thereafter when a Belle player was fouled and made the basket, along with the ensuing free throw, pushing the score to 54-49.
Roddy had 18 points in the game, while Bryant had 13 and Stover scored 10.
“We played well, but didn’t shoot really well,”âLuitjens said.â“We didn’t get much inside against them.”
The team, which finished the year with a record of 12-9, returns every player next year with the exception of Konkol.
“Iâthink we could be really good,” Luitjens said. “It depends on how much time they want to spend  (in the offseason) shooting.”
