Four Custer County elders were  honored last Tuesday evening, Feb. 2, during the 2010 Elders’ Wisdom, Children’s Song™. It was an evening, unlike many others, for the honorees. And, quite eye opening for one.

“I was extremely honored,” said Joyce Hazeltine, former South Dakota secretary of state. “The program was outstanding. It gave us all a new insight on life.”

Hazeltine, Marty Marht, Billâ??Savery and Lila Lytle were the four elders chosen to help honor the richness of the Custer community through storytelling in song and spoken word.

Larry Long developed Elders’ Wisdom, Children’s Song™as a way to connect. Long, a songwriter and community activist, works toward breaking down barriers that exist in communities by building bridges and connection.

Available only in the print version of the Custer County Chronicle.
