The decade of 2000-09 — We survived!

Jason’s series of articles on the top stories of the decade brught back a lot of memories, as I was here for them all, having arrived in Custer Dec. 10, 1999, to purchase the Custer County Chronicle and the Hill Prevailer News — knowing full well there was another paper in town.

When we received the news that the Small Business Administration had approved our loan, we immediately packed up all our newspaper stuff, but just our bare personal necessities, and drove out here with a small U-haul.

Once here, we spent most of the day looking for an apartment, which was harder than we could have imagined. Finally, after pleading for several hours, a landlord finally agreed to rent to us when we promised that the Chronicle would guarantee the monthly rent.
