‘Loser’ set to lose again

Dawn Ramsey finished as runner-up in last year’s Custer County Chronicle “Biggest Loser” contest and plans to enter the contest again this year. Ramsey said the accountability of being in the newspaper for six months helped aid her in her quest to lose weight.

A year ago at this time, Dawn Ramsey was six months away from her 30th class reunion and wanted to lose 30 pounds before the big event.
Ramsey, a Hermosa resident, joined forces with her sister-in-law and fellow Hermosa resident, Crystal Wiles, to form the “Hermosa Hopefuls”âand set out on the Custer County Chronicle’s “Biggest Loser”âcontest, hoping to shed that weight.
Together, the two dominated the competition, with Wiles placing first, Ramsey placing second and the team lapping the field in terms of weight lost. By herself, Ramsey shed 27-1/2 pounds through diet and exercise.
Prior to joining the Chronicle’s “Biggest Loser,”âRamsey had joined another weight loss contest with nine friends, in which they each paid $50 to enter and the winner took all the cash. That wasn’t nearly as successful as the “Biggest Loser”âproved to be.
“It was very helpful (having a teammate),”âshe said.â“We called each other and kept each other in check. We really got down to business two weeks before the weigh-ins.”
Ramsey said she worked out two to three times a week for the first couple of weeks of each month and then worked out virtually every day the last two weeks before each weigh- in.
“The thing Iâlike about this is that it’s six months,”âshe said.â“It was very exciting (finishing second). We were always first in the team. This year, I’m getting first.”
