What began as a viral infection for Jim Montgomery in 2003 morphed into something more, something that threatens his life every day. “What I have is called cardiomyopathy,” Montgomery, 30, said last Wednesday. “It’s a weakening of the heart muscle, which in turn makes it harder for the heart to pump blood throughout your body.” Organizers in Buffalo Gap, where Montgomery moved with his father three years ago, are planning a benefit to help offset the monumental healthcare bills he has and will receive. Available only in the print version of the Custer County Chronicle. To subscribe, call 605-673-2217.
