Joe McFarland never planned on being a politician. In fact, it wasn’t even his idea to run for the Custer County Commission in 1994. As it turns out, he owes his entire political career to former mayor and city alderman Lee Sutton. McFarland was in Florida visiting friends when Sutton called and asked him to run for city council. McFarland gave him every excuse he could think of why he couldn’t do it. So, Sutton asked, “How about county commission?” “All my excuses had been used,”âMcFarland said.â“I’d like to say Iâhad all this unselfish motivation to help the county.”
