McFarland reflects on time as commissioner

Jason Ferguson
Published: Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Joe McFarland was presented a plaque from his fellow commissioners in honor of his nearly 15 years of service to the county as a commissioner during his final meeting Sept. 24. Pictured from left are commissioners Leonard Wood, McFarland, Travis Bies, Dave Hazeltine and Mark Hartman.

Joe McFarland never planned on being a politician. In fact, it wasn’t even his idea to run for the Custer County Commission in 1994. As it turns out, he owes his entire political career to former mayor and city alderman Lee Sutton.

McFarland was in Florida visiting friends when Sutton called and asked him to run for city council. McFarland gave him every excuse he could think of why he couldn’t do it. So, Sutton asked, “How about county commission?”

“All my excuses had been used,”âMcFarland said.â“I’d like to say Iâhad all this unselfish motivation to help the county.”
