Custer resident and photographer Paul Horsted has been following the 1874 Black Hills Expedition trail for nearly 10 years, mostly in the Black Hills. Now he and his co-authors are trying to track it a little further, to include the 655-mile route of Custer's wagon train as it came to the Black Hills across the plains, and then returned home again a few weeks later. Horsted was co-author with Ernest Grafe of the 2002 book, “Exploring With Custer: The 1874 Black Hills Expedition.” That book focused on photo sites, the gold discovery, and the expedition trail within the Black Hills and near the town of Custer, but the author says he's now excited to share the rest of the story in a companion volume entitled “Crossing the Plains with Custer,” which will be released in October. (Horsted notes he hopes to have advance copies for sale at the Buffalo Roundup Festival Sept. 26-27 in Custer State Park).
