Cozy Dorton walked into Custer Elementary just as she has thousands of time before. Something was different this time, though. As she passed the board that held photos of all the teachers and staff members employed by the school, she noticed her picture was missing.
“That’s when it really hit me,” she said. “This is for real.”
Cozy, along with her husband, Bob Dorton, and Larry Vickers of Hermosa, are retiring from the Custer School District this year. The three have a combined 100 years of teaching experience.
Vickers, who taught grades six, seven and eight, is retiring from Hermosa School with 34 years of teaching experience. Bob, who retires with 27 years of teaching, spent most of his career at Custer Middle School, teaching social studies. Bob also taught a few years at Fairburn and Hermosa schools. Cozy taught at Custer Elementary School for 39 years — 14 years of third grade, 25 of kindergarten.
