Former Hills residents take over Shady Rest

Published: Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

The Dvorak family recently purchased the Shady Rest Hotel in Custer. From left are KyleeAnn, Ann, John and Dominic Dvorak. Not pictured are Matt and Josie. The Dvoraks moved back to the Black Hills after spending 11 years in Oregon.

The Shady Rest Motel has new owners, but those owners aren’t new to the area.
The hotel, formerly owned by Joel and Kari Tucker, and Bill and Marie Tucker before them, was recently purchased by John and Ann Dvorak. The Dvorak family has spent the past 11 years in Oregon, but before that, were Black Hills residents.
“We were trying to get back to South Dakota,” John said. “We wanted to get to where family was closer, so our kids could spend more time with family growing up, and would know what life was like living here.”
John is originally from Gettes, while Ann has lived in both Rapid City and Belle Fourche. Her parents, Duke and Peg Schneller, have lived in Custer for the past several years. Ann was a park ranger at Mount Rushmore for five years, while John had the same job at Wind Cave National Park. When the two married in 1992, they moved to Hillsboro, Ore., where John was an electrical engineer with Intel.
