spired by a Native North American legend, Marlize Loucks is creating “Buffalo Woman” for this year’s Custer Stampede art auction.
The piece, which Loucks has been working on for over a month, is made from scratchboard. Scratchboard is cardboard similar to poster board that has been coated on one side with a layer of hard white chalk. The artist paints, rolls or sprays black ink onto the surface. After the ink dries, the artist scratches through the ink with a sharp stylus or knife, creating white marks or lines by exposing the chalk underneath.
“Scratchboard has always been an interest of mine,”âLoucks said.â“I have been doing it for 30 years. I like the fine details.”
