As Yogi would say, ‘It’s deja vu all over again’

If you have been following the news we are being fed out of Syria, you can almost hear the drums of war beating again. The Obama administration now claims that there is “almost no doubt” that the Assad regime in Syria has used weapons of mass destruction, specifically chemical weapons, on its own people. Obama said almost a year ago that if that line was crossed the U.S. would have to do something about it. What he meant by that isn’t exactly clear, but armed drones or missiles are a good bet.
This all comes at a time when the Obama administration is up to its neck in the swamp of scandals and would lead some to believe this is too much of a coincidence. Presidents before Obama have often resorted to some kind of war or threat of war to divert attention away from their political problems. Call us cynics, but we have a difficult time believing chemical weapons have actually been used on the general population of Syria. Tear gas is more than likely the culprit, but we could be wrong.
Anyway, the Assad regime says it’s the rebels who have used chemical weapons, not them. They have thrown their doors open to U.N. inspectors, who were in the country behind enemy lines earlier this week. It appears the U.S. and its British ally have already made up their collective minds to blow up key targets in Syria. British and U.S. warships were moving into position over the weekend to be ready to launch cruise missiles into Syria.
And so it goes. British Foreign Secretary William Hague has also warned that the world could not stand by and allow the Assad regime to use chemical weapons against the Syrian people “with impunity.” Looks like the U.S. and Great Britain are in lock step on this one. We can only hope the intelligence we are getting out of Syria is better than that which preceeded the war in Iraq and led to the invasion of that country.
It does seem strange that as the war has wound down in Iraq and is in the process of winding down in Afghanistan, we have to be involved in a war in another country. It appears that we jump from one crisis to another. In the meantime, the economy continues to lag on the home front and more and more jobs are converted from full-time to part-time in preparation of the implementation of Obamacare. What better diversion than another war?
Any attack on Syria now would be complicated by that country’s relationship with the Russians who have been supplying Syria with military aid. This situation is similar to the Korean War where China was actively backing North Korea with troops and supplies. In Vietnam, the Russians were unloading military supplies at the harbors in North Vietnam, cities that were spared from U.S. bombs for obvious reasons.
One of Yogi Berra’s famous “Yogiisms” is “It’s deja vu all over again.” He also said, “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.” It appears the United States is about to take the fork in the path leading to military intervention once again in a foreign country.
