Just what we need, more needless laws

Our state legislators are in Pierre until the middleof March, and we all know what that means—the annual competition of who can create the most nonsensical, waste-of-time law is well under way. I have long questioned if it is necessary for states across the U.S. to meet once a year and add hundreds of more laws to the books. Think about it. If the legislature adds 100 more laws each year this decade, 1,000 more laws will be on the books by 2019. Unfortunately, many of those will be completely unnecessary encroachments on our everyday lives. There is obviously a need for laws in our country. There are many things that should be, and are, illegal. You won’t get any argument from me on that. What I will argue is some of the special interest ideas for laws that come up every year. A perfect example is the brilliant idea to ban the riding of ATVs on city streets. That is an actual law proposed this year. Why? Available only in the print version of the Custer County Chronicle.
