Amy Hattervig

Amy Vesta Hattervig was born Dec. 25, 1912, in Irene, S.D., to Chris and Christina (Jensen)�Jorgensen. The family moved to Viborg, S.D., and she was raised on a farm west of there. She attended grade school at the school that has been moved into Viborg for use as the museum. This is the same school her mother attended. Amy graduated from Viborg High School in 1930. She married Oscar Hattervig on Aug. 5, 1936, and two children were born to this union: Mary Ann and James Ronald. they lived in Viborg and Sioux Falls, S.D., for a short time and then moved to a farm six miles west of Viborg. Amy was a member of Meldal Lutheran Church and was active in ladies aid, mission band,�Luther league and other church activities. She enjoyed gardening while on the farm. After Oscar died on April 11, 1965, Amy cared for her parents until their deaths. She them moved to Sioux Falls to be close to her daughter and family. She worked as an in-home caregiver for 20 years and dearly loved her jobs. In 2005, she moved back to Viborg, living at Pioneer Memorial Assisted Living quarters. Amy died Dec. 28, 2009. She was 97. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; daughter, Mary Ann; two brothers; two sisters, one great-grandchild; and one great-great-grandchild. She is survived by her son, James (Pat) of Custer, S.D.; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Services were held Dec. 31 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Viborg, with Pastor Dana Steinwand officiating. Interment followed at Rosehill Cemetery in Viborg.
