Don Ray Katsch was born in Hot Springs, S.D., on May 30, 1927, to Jess and Vida Fern Katsch. Don served his country in the Army during World War II, then returned home to work with heavy equipment in construction.
In the early ’70s, he moved to Sturgis, S.D., where he worked in maintenance for an apartment complex. Upon his retirement, he moved to Hot Springs, S.D., to the Michael J Fitzmaurice South Dakota Veterans Home. Don enjoyed living at the soldiers home, where he had many friends and a great staff. He enjoyed the social camaraderie with all, especially playing cards and field trips.
Don died Nov. 1, 2013, at the Veteran's Administration hospital in Hot Springs. He was 86.
Don is preceded in death by his parents; son, Kurt Douglas Katsch; sister, Lenore Johnson; and great-grandson Noah Thomas Neiffer.
He is survived by five children, Donna Koch of Lewistown, Mont., Lucy (Kenny) Rice of Rushville, Neb., Vance Katsch of Colorado Springs, Colo., Dixie (Bob) Neiffer of Custer, S.D., and Laura (Jerry) Muckler of Custer; his brother, Keith Katsch of Fairburn, S.D.; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great- great-grandchild.
Services were Nov. 6 at the Michael J. Fitzmaurice Veteran's Home Chapel with Chaplain Loyd Nielson Burial service with military honors followed at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
