Joseph Roberts

Joseph Roberts was born in Buffalo, S.D., in 1939. He devoted his life to service to others. After serving in the U.S. Air Force (1958-62), he received his BA from Black Hills State and his master’s degree in social work from the University of Michigan.
He worked as a social worker and therapist at the Department of Social Services, the Children’s Home of Texas, West River Mental Health and in private practice. After a full career he entered the Peace Corps at the age of 63, serving in Guyana and Romania. He then went to work at Sen. Tim Johnson’s office in Rapid City, where he helped constituents navigate the bureaucracies of the VA, the military and immigration and naturalization services. 
Joe, formerly of Custer, S.D., died Sept. 23, 2013, at the Hospice of the Hills in Rapid City, S.D. He was 74. 
He is survived by his children, Carrie Bergstrom and Will Roberts; and by three grandchildren, Emmett, Matilda and Otis. 
A memorial celebration was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, at the Youth and Family Services gymnasium (120 E. Adams St., Rapid City). Attendees were asked to bring their stories and memories. 
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made at Med5 Credit Union to Working Against Violence, Inc., Youth and Family Services, Cornerstone Rescue Mission and Wellspring.
