Janice Marie (Lancaster) Kooyman was born Nov. 26, 1947, in Hot Springs, S.D., to Harvey Edward Lancaster and Mae Flower (Denton) Lancaster.
Janice grew up in a house in Custer State Park with her two older brothers, Ron and Gary. She went to school in a one-room school house in Custer State Park until high school, when she attended and graduated from Custer (S.D.) High School in 1966. While living in the park as a teenager, she spent her summers working at Custer Game Lodge where she helped her mother in the kitchen, cleaned rooms and also worked at Legion Lake Cabins.
In June 1966, she married Ralph Kelley of Custer. They had three daughters, Tina Mae, Tammy Marie and Tanya Machelle. She married Harry Kooyman of Custer April 15, 1994. She worked various jobs in Custer throughout the years, retiring form Telco FCU.
During her years, Janice was a member of the Home Extension Project Pals, was in charge of organizing the sunflower for Gold Discovery Days pageant of Paha Sapa and later served on the Gold Discovery Days committee. Her hobbies included bowling, cooking, gardening, tole painting, ceramics, macramé and bird watching. In the months before her passing, she could be seen sitting on her deck or looking out her dining room window watching her doves and robins eating and bathing in the bird bath.
Janice was a wonderful, caring person. She loved her family very much and enjoyed spending time with them. Everyone who knew her knew she had to have her “face on” before leaving the house.
Janice lost her battle with leukemia July 19, 2013, at Custer Regional Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. She was 65.
Janice was preceded in death by her mother, Mae Lancaster; a nephew; and many aunts and uncles.
